Abbaye de Sénanque - Gordes

In the heart of the Luberon, in a landscape of breathtaking beauty, lies the Abbey of Sénanque. This majestic building is one of the most emblematic treasures of the Luberon.

Founded in 1148 by Cistercian monks, the Abbey of Sénanque is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture. Its simple and austere appearance fits perfectly with the surrounding landscape of lavender fields and green hills. The abbey was built of local stone, which makes it harmonise perfectly with its natural surroundings.

When you enter the abbey, you are immediately struck by the peace and serenity that reigns in this place. The wide, empty spaces and elegant vaults create an atmosphere that encourages reflection and contemplation. The Cistercian monks who live here still follow the strict rules of their order and devote their lives to prayer and study.

Sénanque Abbey is also famous for its beautiful gardens, where the monks still grow medicinal plants and aromatic herbs. These lovingly laid out gardens are an enchanting sight all year round. In summer, when the lavender fields are in full bloom, the abbey becomes a veritable painting of colours and beguiling fragrances.

A visit to Senanque Abbey is an experience in itself. It is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the thousand-year history of this sacred place, to contemplate its architectural beauty and to feel the inner peace that emanates from it. Whether you are a believer or simply looking for serenity, Sénanque Abbey is a unique place where the spirit finds refuge.

The monks of Sénanque offer you the opportunity to visit the medieval abbey: the abbey church, the cloister, the chapter house, the boiler house and the former dormitory. Turn back time by visiting with the Histopad! A digital tablet that will immerse you in the life of the first monks of Sénanque and show you the abbey in the 12th century.
Then go on a voyage of discovery through the lives of the monks who today make up the community of Sénanque.

Guided (1 hour in French) or non-guided visits with HistoPad (10 languages). A visit booklet for children is available at www.senanque.fr.

The shop and bookshop are open Mondays to Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00 and Sundays from 13:45 to 17:00 (opening hours vary according to the season, see www.senanque.fr).
